Segment 1

What is Segment 1?

Students under the age of 18 and are ready to start learning to drive are to take a Segment 1 class. This driver education class is offered before the driver begins supervised driving.
A teen must be 14 years, 8 months of age on or before the first scheduled day of class and have parent/guardian permission.
Segment 1 class requires a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction, a minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and a minimum of four hours of observation time in a training vehicle.
What Every Driver Must Know contains information about operating a motor vehicle safely on Michigan roads and is one of the tools used to teach teen drivers in Michigan driver education programs.
Successful completion of a state-approved driver education program does not, alone, make a teenager a responsible, experienced driver. Traffic safety education involves family, community, industry, government and personal factors such as motivation, maturity, and perceptive abilities.
The Michigan's Graduated License System graphicMichigan Graduated License System (shown right) shows how graduated driver licensing and driver education are intertwined. The The Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing: A Guide for Parents contains valuable information on graduated driver licensing, driver education, coaching tips for parents and more. Parents and teens are encouraged to read this publication.
Segment 1 cost: $445
We understand this is a cost and we maintain our low fees to support the families of our community. All books/class materials are provided free of charge.
We strongly recommend students possessing SmartPhones. We will be using them to interact with the app, GooseChase. Students will be asked to download it during the first class. Students may download the app now from the App Store or Google Play.

A Segment 1 class schedule can be found here.
